Design The Modern Skateboard

Design Within Reach is proud to co-sponsor this event with Austin’s own No-Comply Skate Shop. In addition to their many contributions, No-Comply will stage an exhibition at the studio with some of Austin’s most talented professional skaters on the night of the event.

We are requesting modern inspired designs that exemplify what modern means now. No-Comply will produce a board with the best in show design to be presented to the winner. The winning design may also be produced as a shop board to be sold at No Comply Skate Shop. No royalties will be paid, but you have the satisfaction of knowing your design is rolling around on the streets of Austin.

This is a juried exhibition open to graphic designers and fine artists in the Austin and San Antonio areas. Selected entries will be displayed at our event on Thursday, September 18th. A full list of jurors will be announced soon.

Intent to submit must be emailed to Austin@dwr.com no later than 12am on Saturday, August 23rd

All completed submissions must be dropped off at the Austin studio no later than 7pm on Friday, September 12th

Submissions must be printed at 100% (actual size)

The design must be mounted on foam core trimmed to the shape of the template. Please do not deviate from the shape or dimensions of the 8″x32″ template provided.

Submissions must include a clearly labeled CD version in addition to the high resolution printed board

Only one design per application, please. If you wish to submit more than one design, you must fill out separate applications for each entry.

atx in the nyc

I’ve been out of town for a while, but I’m back to the heat madess in Austin… and the sad thing is, I’m loving it. Sweat. Oh yes, so salty. Burning of the eyeballs. I managed to take a road trip to NYC with my uncle, who lives in Brooklyn, practically unplanned. That had to be one of the best decisions of this summer.

During the trip I somehow meet up with seven or eight people from Austin, and there was so much skating… dare I say too much? Things were raw, ranging from 6 week couch hopping broke Gray Adkin’s, huge swankles to security gaurd fights, and 4am last call bars to lost trains home. Max happened to be in Boston for the week and he came down to the city and chilled with me for a couple days, and Fletcher followed the day or two after. He took a nice little trip from Austin to Maine, Robstock, to NYC, to Boston, back to Austin… with some insane stories to top it off, but a broken camera :(.

In all honesty that city is truely a culture shock. Managing without a car subtracts motivation to get clips and photos, but it was so much fun. Some of these dudes we met were straight out of the movie Kids, and they were awesome. Part of me wanted to stay, for a long while, but it’s also super nice to be back in Austin.
